Ghana Cedi Begins 2026 Week at GH¢10.50 Against US Dollar

The Ghana cedi has opened trading on the first Monday of 2026 on a cautious note, exchanging at GH¢10.50 to the US dollar on the retail market.

Market watchers say the opening rate reflects ongoing pressures on the local currency, even as authorities continue efforts to stabilise the forex market. Traders noted that while the cedi has shown brief moments of resilience in recent weeks, demand for foreign currency — particularly the United States dollar — remains strong.

The cedi’s performance is being closely monitored by businesses, importers and consumers, many of whom are sensitive to fluctuations that directly affect prices of goods and services. Analysts say global economic conditions, coupled with domestic demand for forex, continue to play a major role in shaping the currency’s movement.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Ghana is expected to maintain its interventions and policy measures aimed at improving liquidity and restoring confidence in the local currency.

As trading continues through the week, all eyes will be on whether the cedi can hold its ground or face further pressure in the days ahead.
