How a Small Act of Kindness Earned Kalybos a GH₵100,000 Cheque

Sometimes, a simple act of kindness can open doors you never expected — just ask Ghanaian actor and comedian Kalybos, real name Richard Asante.

In a heartwarming moment shared on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with arts and culture journalist Kwame Dadzie, Kalybos recalled an unforgettable experience from 2016 — one that left a lasting impact not just on some young fans, but on his own life too.

“I was stuck in heavy traffic on the Osu road when a car pulled up next to me,” he began. “Inside were a man and his kids — they’d clearly just picked them up. The children spotted me and got so excited. They wanted to take a picture, but their dad reminded them they were in traffic.”

Rather than just wave and drive off, Kalybos did something unexpected.

“I looked ahead and realized traffic wasn’t moving anytime soon, so I stepped out of my car, went over, and asked if I could hop in the back seat. We took pictures, laughed, and just had a lovely moment. The father was stunned. Before we parted, he asked for my number.”

What seemed like just a kind gesture turned out to be the beginning of something bigger. A few days later, the man called.

“He told me he mostly spends time with his kids when he visits Ghana,” Kalybos shared. “He also told me how, once at a mall, his children were brushed off by a popular actress when they asked for a photo. That experience had stuck with them.”

The man was so moved by Kalybos’ humility and the joy he brought to his kids that he invited him to his office for a chat.

“I went over, we talked a bit, and before I left, he handed me an envelope,” Kalybos said. “Something told me to open it. Inside was a cheque — the biggest free money I’ve ever received. Want to know how much? A hundred thousand Ghana cedis.”

That generous gesture helped Kalybos buy his second car — a gift made possible by nothing more than a moment of kindness and genuine human connection.

Best known for his role in the hit comedy series Boys Kasa alongside Ahoufe Patri, Kalybos has since become one of Ghana’s most beloved comedic talents. He’s starred in movies like Kalybos in China, Amakye and Dede, and John and John, and has been featured in major brand campaigns across the country.

But beyond the cameras and scripts, stories like this reveal the heart behind the humor — and remind us all that sometimes, doing the right thing really does pay off.
